APO-ANAMORPHIC ART by Shereen Miller [CONTINUED]

© Anamorphic/Apo-anamorphic Art by Shereen Miller

In 1976 Shereen Miller encountered Anamorphic Art at Amsterdam's RIJKS Museum in Holland and was compelled to pursue it. At that time there was no technical information available on the subject, no world wide web or mentors.

Shereen Miller's experiments in optical filtered light rays led to circular perspectives.  In 1977 Shereen presented the first Anamorphic Solo Exhibition in the History of Art. The viewer's fascination, intrigue and interest in Miller's contemporary anamorphics created a New Movement in Art in the last quarter of the 20th. century.

By 1980 this unheard of, rare and unique art-form of the 14th.  century contemporized by Shereen Miller was selected for prestigious Collective International Juried Exhibitions in Basel [ART FAIR ‘79], Paris [SALON de 1979] and America’s Smithsonian Museum [WASH ART 79] while  simultaneously Miller presented Solo Exhibitions of Ana/Apo-anamorphic Art in Art Museums and Galleries in major Art capitals of the world such as New York, London, Monte Carlo, Mumbai, Athens, Kuwait, gaining widespread International Honors and attention that continued to generate interest in this Art Movement. No other contemporary artist has presented Solo Exhibitions of Ana/Apo-anamorphic Art.

Today, there are many followers of this Art Movement but Miller is the only contemporary Fine Artist that has developed a comprehensive body of knowledge on this subject [“CREATIVE GENIUS”]and art that incorporated the physics, psychology, philosophy or metaphysical aspects of this perspective art form that includes Surreal- landscapes, Portraiture, Figurative perspectives and Abstracts while synchronizing simultaneously two viewing horizontal and vertical levels of color, composition and form.

In 1990 Shereen Miller presented the first Apo-anamorphic Abstract in the history of Art. Instead of the dissimulated realistic form on the horizontal laid canvas Miller created a new genre of Apo-anamorphic abstracted forms.

Remaining constantly in the forefront of creative ingenuity while using her extensive academic acumen in Philosophy, Psychology and Physics, Miller has now evolved this 14th century art form into the 21st century creating  dual abstracted viewing levels with multiple cylindrical reflections [2004].

“Evidence of a Genius at Work”  by Linda Ledford & Cynthia Hackney

The Art Curators-Linda Ledford and Cynthia Hackney of the Texas Regional Renaissance Exhibition [1991] in which Shereen Miller was selected from the State of Texas as the Featured Artist, her Solo Exhibition showcased within the center of this Collective Exhibition,  described Miller’s art as follows:  “Evidence of a Genius at Work”

“International artist Shereen Miller’s three dimensional Apo-anamorphism converges two powerful, yet disparate forms of art...Realism and Abstract. Miller’s use of a cylindrical mirror to capture the abstract image on to canvas and transform it into a realistic image of another dimension is evidence of a genius at work. By the use of mathematical calculations and scientific, determined strokes, Miller explores realms unknown to most of us.”

Shereen Miller observes:

Working alone in a genre unknown to the world with no information available on the subject and nothing to guide me, except my intuition and imagination, my anamorphic journey began in the autumn of 1976 propelled by an ancient archetype toward a destiny I never imagined possible.

This lonely, isolated exploration and research was inspired, by my visual perception, intuition and  imagination, to create simultaneous harmony and balance between two major opposing genres of art-the Abstract and the Realistic, within one anamorphic viewing experience. By 1979 I had created and presented to the world, a new contemporary concept synchronizing two viewing levels of an ancient art originated by Leonardo da Vinci.

In 1979 Apo-Anamorphic Art was a new concept to the art world. The term Apo-Anamorphic is of Greek origin and was specifically selected and given to me by the Athen’s born Director of Greek’s National-Theaters-Mario Angelospoulos during my 1980 Solo Exhibition in  Athens at the Syllogi gallery.

AFRICA Comments: 1980 -1983

“Shereen Miller brings to Lagos a new art and a new excitement! ....It is a meticulously calculated distortion which only the most creative mind could achieve. Shereen Miller’s mind and fingers are a combination of a genius...

I once saw and admired the anamorphic painting of Edward VI in the National Gallery in London and right here, Shereen has produced in unbelievable accuracy the anamorphic of our President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari”

“Shereen Miller was the first to present anamorphic art to the Middle East and many will remember her exhibits last year at the National Council. Her latest work is a unique portrait of His Highness, the Amir,  ingeniously presented in her present medium. With her keen sense of innovation Shereen Miller continues to be one of the major contributors toward the progress of art in Kuwait.”      Kuwait Times March 20, 1978

“I have had the absolute privilege of meeting Shereen Miller who is the artist of this incredible and profound art. The magic happened when I came closer to the display...in the cylinder was this incredible, profound, most gorgeous dove. It reinforced inside of me that when I look at something I am only seeing the surface but when I look deeper I see something more beautiful, profound, rich and full. This is the message I received from Shereen Miller’s art.”             Journalist Cahlin  [22 June 1995]

" I was delighted and amazed by your visual images dealing with the concepts of Reality, distortion and perfection. I am still challenged by the questions raised by these images and from time to time ponder these answers. Great art delights the senses as well as questions the nature of Reality. Your art did both."
